3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Learning to Surf

1. You won’t “get it” on day one—and that’s normal.
When you see surfers on social media gliding effortlessly down the face of a wave, it’s easy to believe that’s how it’s supposed to look. But real-life surfing starts with struggle. It’s okay to flop around, to miss waves, and to feel like a fish out of water (literally). Progress comes slowly, and that’s part of the reward.

2. Fear doesn’t go away—you just get better at dancing with it.
The ocean is powerful. And that can be scary. But surfing teaches you to face that fear head-on. With each session, your confidence builds. You learn to read the water, trust your instincts, and stay calm in chaos. Fear becomes fuel.

3. Surfing isn’t about dominating the ocean, it’s about flowing with it.
One of the biggest mindset shifts for me was realizing that surfing isn’t about conquering the sea—it’s about learning to move with it. When you stop fighting the waves and start listening to them, everything changes.

In Finding Waves, I dive deeper into these lessons—and many more I learned the hard way. It’s a crash course in both surfing and self-growth.
